Wife, mother, and child protective service Ellen Moore has saved countless children over the years. On one rushed morning, on her way to save two girls in danger, she accidentally locks her infant daughter, Avery, in a car. Avery's life hangs in the balance, as does Ellen's future. Ten-year-old Jenny Briard finds herself in a strange town after her father is arrested. Hoping to find the grandmother she's never met, Jenny's life will intersect with Ellen's in ways neither could have predicted.Heather Gudenkauf has created another masterpiece. Her main characters are deeply complex, flawed, human beings who readers can't help but to champion. Gudenkauf has done a masterful job capturing the conflicts of a social worker charged with protecting vulnerable children, I know because I interned in such a position during grad school. The competence of Ellen's professional life is in such contrast to the moment of distraction that just might end in tragedy--a mistake easy to judge as "it could never happen to me" but LITTLE MERCIES shows us that yes, it very well could happen to any of us. Equally impressive, Gudenkauf captures the nuances of the defense mechanisms of a little girl trying not to end up back in foster care.
Gudenkauf if my favorite writer. I've read THESE THINGS HIDDEN close to ten times and I'm quite sure I'll reread and re-reread LITTLE MERCIES similarly. Told in Ellen's first person POV alternating with third person chapters centering on Jenny, the voices are at times lyrical, heartbreaking while also suspenseful with the need to keep reading to find out what happens next. I recommend this book to everyone and know you'll have as much pleasure as I did reading this gem. I rarely give 5 star reviews, but I'd give this 10 stars of I could.

*****SPOILER ALERTS*****
This novel was a real tear-jerker but I did enjoy it. Ms. Gudenkauf’s writing is very straightforward yet emotional. The ending was a relatively happy ending. Ellen’s life was restored, and she learned to look at the victims of the system in a new way. Not every woman who has a horrible thing happen to her child is necessarily a negligent mother. Sometimes terrible accidents occur through no forseeable reason. Sometimes the woman is the victim of bad luck, or is in the wrong place at the wrong time. The important thing is to learn from the accident, or the mistake. Ellen’s life is juxtapositioned with Diedre Olmstead’s life. Diedre loved her boyfriend James more than her daughter Jenny, when Diedre was 5 years younger. She let her monster of a boyfriend beat the s*** out of her daughter when Jenny was 4 years old. She didn’t intervene by calling the police or hitting James with crowbar to stop him. Years later James (who Diedre married) murders his own daughter Madelyn and gets away with murder. Diedre knows James killed Madelyn but does nothing to gain justice for Madelyn’s murder. In the end Diedre comes to her daughter Jenny’s defense the only way she knows how—-by rejecting her. After she shoots James in his sleep she’s sentenced to 10 years in prison for manslaughter. Diedre was a victim also, but a victim who continually made many mistakes because of her bad choices. She chose her abusive husband over her children. I believe she deserved the sentence imposed upon her by the court, but I still felt sorry for her.
Ellen, on the hand, almost lost her 11-month old daughter Avery, but not because of negligence. It was a terrible accident based upon a lack of communication between herself and her husband Adam. I’m not “old fashioned” & consider myself a women’s rights believer, but I feel Ellen should have taken a little more time off from her demanding job as a social worker after her third child was born. At the end of the novel she finally does this, having learned the hard way it’s hard to juggle a stressful career with the needs of two children ages 7 and 9, and an 11 month old toddler. If a woman has a working spouse (as opposed to being a divorced woman or single mom), don’t have children if you can’t afford to care for them without working an 8-hour day, and pawning them off on day care workers and schools. (I’ll probably have people screaming at me in disagreement. But oh well. That’s what I believe.)
This was a terrific novel and very thought-provoking.
The early morning rush was nothing new for dedicated social worker Ellen Moore – Adam, her husband and their three children all went in different directions most days, so leaving Adam at home with the children while she rushed off to work, knowing she was going to be late yet again, was normal. But Ellen had a phone call from the young daughter of a client and her immediate response was to change directions and head for the house, hoping desperately that she wasn’t too late.
The heat was blistering – the air heavy and relentless; but Ellen and the police did their best under bad circumstances. It was only the disturbance behind them; the smashing and yelling of frantic voices, which alerted Ellen to a problem. And her life changed and shattered in that instant.
Jenny Briard was ten years old and her love for her irresponsible father was real. But when they were separated and Jenny was on her own in a bus heading away from him, she wasn’t sure what to do. Older than her years through necessity, she was usually smart enough to keep herself safe and hidden – when she encountered the kindness of a waitress, it meant everything to Jenny, but could she trust her?
Little Mercies is another brilliant psychological thriller by Heather Gudenkauf – every book I’ve read by this author has been to the same standard – high! Gripping and intense; the plot is one that sadly, could and has happened on many occasions. The emotional tension; the heartache; the guilt and trauma – it’s all there. I have no hesitation in recommending Little Mercies highly.
